The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart (A music cycle inspired by the work of John Amos Comenius)

The brilliant thinker John Amos Comenius, whose work still inspires us in the 21st century, is honoured in the music cycle The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart. Together with the composer Tomáš Kačo we will be presenting its world premiere on 28 June 2023 at the Rudolfinum in Prague, 400 years after Comenius finished his Labyrinth.

Imagination, creativity, personal freedom, knowledge of the world and yourself – are the themes which resonate in the music cycle that Tomáš Kačo wrote based on motifs from John Amos Comenius’s work. This talented Czech pianist, composer and arranger, who studied at the Berklee College of Music and sold out the famous Carnegie Hall in 2018, now lives in Los Angeles and performs across the world.

However, he is always happy to return to his native Czech Republic, in particular, if music is involved, which explains why he dived so enthusiastically into the study of The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart. And how did he portray his wanderings with Mr Delusion and Mr Ubiquitous through “this world and all of its things”?

The journey into the Baroque, to the Middle Ages and the mind of Comenius – that was a unique experience. It was so surprising and revelatory for me in many ways. And a whirlwind of emotions and sensations!” says the young composer, smiling and cordially inviting you to the Prague premiere. And because we remember the legacy of the “Teacher of the nation”, the proceeds will support education and the scholarship fund of the Memory of the Nation Gymnasium.

“Whomsoever you can benefit, do it gladly, if possible the whole world,” as John Amos Comenius would say. And then he would undoubtedly remind us that “the power of truth, armed with the light of knowledge, is invincible.”

The benefit concert at the Rudolfinum is part of the Labyrint Fest project, whose long-term focus has been on the legacy of John Amos Comenius; its partners are PKF — Prague Philharmonia, Post Bellum and Kunsthalle Praha.
